Suzhou Daily report (reporter ZHANG Tiantian) A photo of a male doctor kneeling on the floor to conduct surgical operation to a child patient was forwarded and given thumbs-up through We Chat’s function of sharing with friends. It was learned by reporter of Suzhou Daily that this photo was taken in the morning the day before yesterday, and the male doctor in the photo is DONG Xingqiang, a young doctor in Children’s Hospital of Soochow University. He was then rescuing a child patient who was suffering from congenital heart disease at a risk of respiratory failure, and he chose to kneel on the floor to conduct the operation for quicker intubation in a better way. The earlier the intubation was made, the more hope the child would survive.
This impressive photo was taken by LI Ying, director of ICU in Children’s Hospital of Soochow University, and she had witnessed the whole process of the rescue by DONG Xingqiang. She told the reporter that there was a patient transferred suddenly from the department of cardiology at noon the day before yesterday, and the patient was the child in the photo who was being intubated. “The child was only over ten months old suffering from congenital heart disease, and his face turned blue due to respiratory and heart insufficiency when he was transferred to ICU. It was urgent to give him intubation and put him on a respirator, and DONG Xingqiang unhesitatingly kneeled on the floor to conduct the operation for the child.”
Thanks to timely rescue with a respirator, the child had become better in a stable condition in the afternoon that day. However, DONG Xingqiang kept working till 2 p.m. for a short rest. After having taken a rest for only two hours, DONG Xingqiang came to ICU for another rescue of a patient child in a critical condition after a fall from building. He had spent another several busy hours in the operation room for the rescue. It was Saturday when DONG Xingqiang was in continuous shift work, and he has kept working till the morning of yesterday and went off work after finishing ward rounds. LI Ying said that DONG Xingqiang has taken a rest for only two hours during those 24 hours of work from 8 a.m. the day before yesterday till getting off work yesterday.
We think it moving that the doctor kneels on the floor to treat patients, but it is a common practice for medical staffs. DONG Xingqiang had refused our interview for several times, and he said that those senior doctors usually do this in the same way and it was common that he kneeled on the floor for quicker and sooner rescue. “Intubation will help ensure smooth respiration as soon as possible. It is better to make intubation at first try, or it will be difficult to make it due to throat swelling.” LI Ying told the reporter that beds for child patients are relatively lower and taller male doctors will usually kneel on the floor to conduct the operation of intubation for patients. “DONG Xingqiang kneeled on the floor to find the best gesture and aspect for intubation operation. The earlier the intubation is made, the more hope the child will survive. Our doctors will try every gesture to ensure better and sooner rescue and treatment. It is common in our hospital to kneel on the floor to treat patients, and we don’t think it undignified to do that.”
