The strong alliancebetween the Hematology Department of Children’s Hospital of Soochow University led by Professor Hu Shaoyan and the Hematology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University is a grand event in the field of hematology that brings hope to countless children and families suffering fromhematologic diseases.

It is sincerely hoped thatChildren’s Hospital of Soochow University, with the help of resources provided by the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, can strengthen exchanges and cooperation with its peers at home and abroad, give full play to its advantages as a specialist hospital, improve the nationallevel of clinical researches on pediatrichematologic diseases, therebymaking a greater contribution to the health undertaking in both Jiangsu Province and China!

The establishment of the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases in our hospital marks the leading position ofthePediatric Hematology & OncologyCenter of our hospital in China when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic diseases.Over the past six decades, the Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Center of our hospitalhas made great progress and yielded fruitful results. The National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases will provide a broader platform for the development of the Hematology Departmentof our hospital, bringingour diagnosis and treatment to a new level, so that we can offer better services for children with hematologic tumors as well as congenital, genetic and rare diseases.

In terms of the pathogenesis, treatment and development markers of pediatric hematologic diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and aplastic anemia, we will carry out comparative researches on adult and pediatric hematologic diseases, so as to highlight the characteristics of the Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Center of our hospital.

When it comes to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, we will conduct clinical trials together with clinical researches on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for the treatment of adult hematological diseases to supplement the data on pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, making our contribution in the pediatric section to the overall development of the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases.

Rare diseases such as congenital diseases and genetic metabolic diseases are particularly common among children. We should vigorously study the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of these rare diseases relying on the technologicalstrengths of the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, thereby improving the technical level of the Center.

Many oncology drugs have only been tested in adults before, but no similar effort has ever been made in pediatrics. With the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, we can closely integrate the discipline of adult hematology and that of pediatric hematology. Realizing knowledge sharing and complementary clinical data on this platform, we can draw lessons from the experience of adult hematology to improve the diagnosis and treatment of child patients with refractory malignant hematologic diseases.

Under the framework of the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, our hospital will seek multi-center cooperationwith the top 8 children’s hospitals in China. Affected by the development, maturity and monitoring mechanism of the immune system, pediatric hematologic diseases are different from those of adults. For instance, congenital diseases and genetic metabolic diseases are more likely to be found among children. Taking acute leukemia as an example, 80% children with acute leukemia suffer from acute lymphocytic leukemia, while adults are more likely to develop acute non-lymphocytic leukemia.

The National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases aims to study clinical problems and improve the clinical service level. This Clinical Research Center will make greater efforts in clinical and translational science and actively performing individualized treatment, which will remarkably improve the diagnosis and treatment of children with refractory malignant hematologic diseases.
