Children’s Hospital of Soochow University was founded independently in 1959 by the famous domestic pediatric specialists Chen Wumin, Peng Da’en and He Fuzhen, on the base of the pediatric section of the First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou Medical College. The hospital, which is directly subject to Jiangsu Commission of Health, has been developed into a third-grade class-A children’s hospital and congregates medical, teaching and scientific research together.


After more than 60 years of development, the Children’s Hospital of Soochow University has two branches, the General Hospital and Jingde Road Branch. The General Hospital is located on the east side of Jinji Lake, covering a floor area of nearly 60,000 m2. The first phase of the project covers a building area of 133,000 m2. It was officially opened on June 1, 2015. Jingde Road Branch is located in the center of Suzhou Ancient City, surrounded by the garden. It covers a floor area of 18,000 m2 and a building area of 45,000 m2. The hospital has 1,500 beds, of which 1,306 beds are open, and 1,916 staff.


As the emergency medical rescue base for pediatrics in Jiangsu Province, the hospital has fully undertaken the tasks of emergency, critical, serious and difficult children in Suzhou and surrounding areas, and has made important contributions to the development of children’s medical care in Jiangsu and Suzhou. In 2018, the total number of outpatients was nearly 2.281 million, and the number of discharged patients was more than 63,000, and the number of patients carrying out operations was nearly 18,500.


After years of development, departments of the hospital are well set up and specialized departments are developing rapidly. The hospital has 26 clinical departments and 7 medical technology departments covering pediatric fields. There are 12 key Jiangsu provincial clinical departments: Department of Hematology, Neonatology, Pediatric Orthopaedics, Pediatric General Surgery, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Cardiovascular Medicine, Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Medical Imaging, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Urology, Emergency Medicine; 2 key clinical specialty construction units: The Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pediatric Neurology; 3 key clinical specialties in Suzhou: The Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Neurosurgery and Pharmacy.


Based on the Pediatric Clinical Medical College of Soochow University, the hospital comprehensively promotes the reform and innovation of teaching setup and methods. At present, the hospital has doctoral program, master’s degree in pediatrics, master’s degree in emergency medicine, and 64 graduate tutors, including 19 doctoral supervisors. It undertakes the teaching tasks of undergraduate, postgraduate and overseas students every year. More than 40 doctoral students and more than 70 master students are recruited every year. As a national standardized training base for pediatrics, anesthesia, radiation, and ultrasound resident doctors, and national standardized training base for specialists in pediatric medicine and pediatric anesthesiology, it undertakes centralized and standardized training for pediatricians and pediatrics-related doctors in Suzhou and takes the lead to introduce the Life Support Series International Certification Course of American Heart Association (AHA). Nearly 140 doctors are recruited every year (including the combination of four certificates). As the implementation unit of “Pediatrics College of Further Education in Suzhou”, the hospital has successfully held three sessions of classes of pediatrics further education, and recruited and trained 50 students in Suzhou.


The hospital insists on establishing the research hospital, unceasingly strengthens the discipline connotation and the scientific research platform construction, and diligently promotes the medical scientific research innovation ability. Pediatrics is the “13th Five-Year” Jiangsu Provincial Key Medical Subject (Class A), and the Integrated Medicine Center for Neonatal Medicine and Child Heart Disease is the key discipline of maternal and child health in Jiangsu Province. It has 5 key medical disciplines in Suzhou. It has established the construction unit of Jiangsu Early Childhood Development Base, Suzhou Pediatric Internal Medicine Center and Suzhou Pediatric Precision Surgery Clinical Medicine Center (construction project). It has 7 key laboratories in Suzhou, including the School of Pediatrics and Clinical Research of Soochow University, the Transformation Medicine Base of Jiangsu Commission of Health and Suzhou Key Laboratory (Key Laboratory for the Prevention and Treatment of Brain Injury in Children’s Development, Key Laboratory for Translational Medicine in Pediatrics, Key Laboratory for Heart and Vascular Diseases in Children, Key Laboratory for Kidney Diseases in Children, Key Laboratory for Leukemia in Children, Key Laboratory for Respiratory Diseases in Children, and  Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Immunological Diseases in Children). In 2018, the hospital ranked 13th in the list of Chinese hospitals in science and technology value pediatrics; ranked 56th in the list of allergic diseases, and ranked 80th in the list of hematological diseases (including general hospitals). Over the past five years, the hospital has undertaken more than 440 projects of various levels, including 73 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China and scientific research projects of national public welfare industries. It has won 116 provincial, ministerial and municipal science and technology progress awards and provincial and municipal medical new technology introduction awards, including 10 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. It has published more than 1,300 scientific and technological papers, of which 276 were SCI papers, 78 authorized invention and utility model patents, and 5 computer software copyrights. It has held more than 100 national and provincial continuing medical education projects.


In terms of talent training, reserve, introduction and talent echelon construction, the hospital has gradually cultivated a top talent team with comprehensive ability of medicine, teaching and research and innovative consciousness. In the past five years, there have been 1 medical leader and innovation team of “Developing Health by Science and Education”, 2 specially employed medical experts, 1 specially employed professor, 4 key medical talents, 1 health leader, 6 top health talents, 7 training targets of “333 Project”, 1 “innovative and entrepreneurial doctor”, 1 “innovative and entrepreneurial talent”; 2 Gusu health “leading talent”; 10 Gusu health “key talent”, 8 Gusu health “youth top talent”; 3 Gusu health specially employed talents, and 1 flexible introduced talent.


In recent years, the hospital broke down and completed tasks with high quality around Suzhou series of “531” action plan. Since 2000, the hospital has started the operation of the critical newborn transfer system, which covers Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Taizhou and other counties, and has transferred more than 20,000 critical newborns. The hospital has successively been established as a provincial guidance center for emergency and severe treatment of newborns in Jiangsu Province, a sub-station for emergency treatment of newborns in Suzhou, a center for emergency treatment of critically ill newborns in Suzhou and a construction unit of a center for trauma treatment of children in Suzhou. It participates in the technical guidance and professional personnel training of the lower-level treatment centers, improves relevant treatment standards and technical specifications, and effectively promotes the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment of newborns and traumatized children in Suzhou and its surrounding areas. Since 2018 when the Health Citizen “531” Multiplication Plan was launched, it has set up medical treatment alliance with 15 community prevention and treatment sites for asthma in children, actively promoted the construction of pediatric medical treatment alliance. At present, it has signed medical consortium cooperation agreements with 40 medical units, and established specialist alliance of newborns, pediatric hematology and pediatric cardiology with a number of pediatric departments of general hospitals in Jiangsu Province.


The hospital adheres to “erudition, excellence, cooperation, benevolence, gratitude”, adheres to the service purpose “care for children, care for life”, and is set as the appointed hospital of “disabled orphan surgery rehabilitation tomorrow plan” in Jiangsu Province. At the same time, the hospital takes the opportunity to create a high-quality hospital, expand and extend services while strengthening its connotation, and was rated as a demonstration hospital for improving medical services nationwide, a provincial and municipal civilized unit, a “safe hospital”, a qualified hospital for implementation of patient safety objective, and “healthy hospital” in 2017 and 2018. “No holiday” and “night” expert out-patient characteristic service are appraised as health industry civilized service brand in Suzhou. “1,000 doctors go to the grass-roots level” and “warm heart” charity fund project won the second and third charity awards in Suzhou. The “Xiaoding Youth Volunteer Camp” public welfare volunteers and “health cloud classroom” science popularization activities are very popular with the society.
